The Saranac Lake Central School District Board of Education is unwavering in its commitment to providing all students with a safe and inclusive environment.  Discriminatory language and behavior in our schools and on our sports fields are categorically unacceptable. Students are entitled to participate in school-sponsored activities without discrimination or harassment.

Because it is the district’s responsibility to protect our children from harm, we feel obligated to address an issue that has stirred conversation and reflection within our community. It is essential to a community to have a school district where students accept differences (diversity), know that everyone should have the same chances (equity), and stand up for others to make them feel welcome and important (inclusion). We want our students to respect and understand different cultures and experiences.

The district’s Code of Conduct Policy No. 5300.70 (Public Conduct on School Property) states, in part:  All persons on school property or attending a school function shall conduct themselves in a respectful and orderly manner. (A.) No person, either alone or with others, shall: (5) Intimidate, harass, or discriminate against any person on the basis of actual or perceived race, creed, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sex, sexual orientation, or gender (including gender identity and expression).

It is inappropriate for any adult, regardless of their role in the school community, to harass or belittle a student in any way in any medium. We remind all community members, parents, coaches, and staff of their crucial role in maintaining a supportive and respectful environment for our students.

We remain dedicated to promoting a culture of respect, diversity, and inclusion within our schools and the wider community, and we will take appropriate action to address any violations of these principles. Together, we can ensure that our district is a place where everyone feels seen, respected, and truly valued.
