Lead Testing Information

Dear Parents/Guardians:

        On September 6, 2016, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed legislation (A.l 0740/S.8158) requiring all school districts and boards of cooperative educational services (BOCES) in New York State to test potable (drinking) water systems for lead contamination and to take responsive actions. The State Department of Health and the State Education Department have established an action level threshold of 15 parts per billion or .015 mg/L. The water sources that test above this level must be immediately taken out of service and corrective action must be taken.

        District Safety Officer, Scott Prue, collected samples from all potential drinking water sources throughout the district this fall, including the typical drinking water sources such as drinking fountains and kitchen sinks and some areas not typically associated with drinking water such as custodial closets and bathroom sinks. In all, 257 samples were collected and sent for testing. 

        The district has received results from testing at all district-owned, currently-in-use properties.  All schools had samples that tested over the allowable limit.  The district immediately took these locations out of service as sources of drinking water. The legislation requires the district to re-test these water sources using different testing parameters in order to help determine the source of the contamination.  We will replace or remediate the affected water pipes and fixtures as appropriate. Before the water source is back in service for students and staff members, additional water tests will be conducted to determine if the replacement/remediation was successful.

    Please be assured that the district is in full compliance with the regulations and will diligently work to ensure drinking water throughout the district meets the new requirements.
