SLCS Electronic Resource Information

·        OPALS (Petrova & Bloomingdale)

    District library automation system accessible by any computer with Internet access. Students, parents, and teachers can view the library’s entire catalogue from their classrooms and homes, which allows everyone involved in the student’s education to assist in the book selection process. Multiple search methods are available making it user friendly for all age levels. OPALS also allows access to the regional online union catalogue and CERF, a database of educational websites.

·        ICICILL  (Petrova, Bloomingdale, Lake Clear)

Interlibrary loan database allowing access to over 300 school, public, and academic libraries with just one search. Students, teachers, and librarians can place requests electronically and receive their items in as quickly as one day (depending on where and how the item is being shipped). Resources available include general collection and professional books, audio books, periodicals, and articles.

·        Renaissance Learning (information) / Renaissance Place (login to programs)

o       Star Reader / Star Math (Petrova)

Two programs that show student ability levels in math and reading. These programs recommend that students be tested twice a year so that growth throughout the year can be measured. Student charts can be printed to show growth over the years as well.

o       Subscription for Petrova Elementary- 257 students (minimum amount) for 1/07-1/08. Student specific usernames and passwords.

o       Accelerated Reader (Petrova)

      Program that tests comprehension of a book. The student takes a quiz (between 5 and 20 questions) about the book. Books are organized into reading levels and are assigned a certain number of points. The number of questions answered correctly determines the number of points awarded for that particular book. AR can be used in conjunction with the everyday reading program.  With a subscription to Renaissance Enterprise, the entire school is granted access to over 70,000 quizzes.

o       Subscription for Petrova Elementary- 300 students (minimum amount) for 1/07-1/08.

·        Ed Helper (Petrova)

       Ed Helper offers printable lesson plans, worksheets, and test preps for teachers. Arranged by subject and grade level for easy accessibility.

·        Individual subscriptions per teacher. Currently 14 subscribers at Petrova Elementary  for 11/06-11/07.

·        Enchanted Learning (Petrova, Bloomingdale, Lake Clear, Lake Colby)

         Over 20,000 fully searchable and printable children's educational web sites and games which are designed to capture the imagination while maximizing creativity, learning, and enjoyment.

o       Subscriptions for 50 teachers at Petrova Elementary for 2/07-2/08. Bloomingdale, Lake Clear, Lake Colby 11/06-11/07.

·        Reading A-Z (Petrova, Bloomingdale, Lake Clear, Lake Cloby)

Searchable and printable leveled readers including, Benchmark Books and Running Records, Lessons and Worksheets, Phonics Program, Phonic Awareness Materials, Poetry Books, Alphabet Materials, High-Frequency Word Books, Vocabulary Books and Activities, Fluency Passages, Reader's Theater Scripts, and Assessments.

·        Teachingbooks.net (SLCS)

Searchable original, in-studio movies of authors and illustrators, audio excerpts of professional book readings, guides to thousands of titles and a wealth of multimedia resources on children's and young adult literature.

·        Abcteach.com (Petrova, Bloomingdale, and Lake Clear)

Printable teaching material (Pre-K through 8th grade) including several thousand documents that are instantly available for downloading and printing. Building tools are available to help create documents when teachers can't find exactly what they are looking for elsewhere.

·        Teachnology.com (Petrova, Bloomingdale, Lake Clear)

    A web portal with a wide variety of resources intended to bring educators into the world of teaching with technology. It provides links to valuable and useful information relative to current and best practices.  A large variety of classroom materials and support tools are also available.

o       Individual subscriptions per teacher. Currently 16 subscribers at Petrova Elementary for 11/06-11/07.  16 subscribers at Bloomingdale, Lake Clear 10/06-10/07.

·        Go.Grolier.com (SLCS)

Users gain access to information from many electronic sources. This online suite consists of eight databases; The New Book of Knowledge, Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Americana, The New Book of Popular Science, Lands and Peoples, America the Beautiful, Amazing Animals of the World, and La Nueva Enciclopedia Cumbre.

        An information rich collection of over 350,000 authenticated K-12 Web resource topics, linked to curriculum standards and subjects by professional educators and librarians.  Includes reading levels.

·        SIRS Discoverer (Petrova, Bloomingdale, Lake Clear)

SIRS features full-text articles with full printing and saving capabilities.  Includes reading levels, article summaries, subject tree, subject headings and keyword searching, an on-screen dictionary and thesaurus, and source information. Search The World Almanac for Kids, Compton’s by Britannica, Spotlight of the Month, Current Events, and Maps of the World.

·        EBSCO Primary Search (SLCS)

    A multidisciplinary database is geared towards elementary. It indexes nearly 100 magazines on topics in current events, health, science and more. Full text is available for more than 50 titles. Coverage for most titles begins in the 1990s. The earliest available date is 1985. Content is updated daily.

·        Junior Edition - K12   
    This periodical database is designed for students in junior high and middle school with access to a variety of indexed and full-text magazines, newspapers and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more.

·        Fountas & Pinnell Guided Reading (Bloomingdale)

    A resource for leveled books and Guided Reading instruction, including over 18,000 leveled books that are sortable by level, genre, series, or publisher, video clips of guided-reading classrooms in action, organizational and classroom management tips, suggested read alouds for all grades, professional development information for individuals and groups.

·        Unitedstreaming.com (SLCS)

Digital video-based learning resource with more than 5,000 full-length videos segmented into 50,000 content-specific video segments and 20,000 images fully searchable and manageable.  Black-line masters, activities, and correlations are also included.

A Media-on-demand system with all media types—3,300 videos; 23,000 core concept clips; 6,000 audio files, including speeches, audio books, and music; 25,000 educational photos, clip art images, and illustrations; and 5,000 print resources, as well as a databank of 15,000 quiz questions and 1,000 pre-made quizzes.

Includes educational resources, programs and activities about natural science and nature studies for students, teachers and librarians/media specialists. Provides an extensive animal database and Young Explorers’ Activity section for grades K-6. Includes teaching resources (lectures, activities and hand outs), natural science newsletter, natural science BLOG, science store and nature trail information sections.
