Mission

Overlooking the ancient Adirondack Mountains, the mission of the Bloomingdale Library Media Center is to be the hub of the curriculum as well as serve student and staff leisure needs.  We are here to facilitate students in meeting New York State Learning Standards and National Technology Foundation Standards via utilizing the American Library Association American Association of School Librarian’s IStandards for the 21st-Century Learner and the Big6 Problem Solving Skills.

Program

Grades 1 and 2 visit the LMC each week at a regular time while half of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th students attend library and half attend Art Class each week on a rotating basis.  Our library media program is at its absolute best when print and electronic resources are integrated into classroom learning.  Units and activities are collaboratively planned by the teacher and library media specialist to supply our students with authentic tasks that are rich with real world applications.  Some final products even become part of our Student Projects section on the Bloomingdale Web!

Resources

We have over 5,000 books on our shelves and subscribe to over 15 periodicals.  Our reference section is kept as up-to-date as possible, giving patrons access to current information.  The LMC is fully automated, allowing patrons to electronically search for books, reference materials, periodicals, and videos in a variety of methods as opposed to the traditional card catalog system.  A proud Board of Regents Electronic Doorway Library, we borrow from and lend books to school, public, special, and academic libraries throughout northern New York.  A member of the Franklin-Essex-Hamilton School Library System, we participate in many special services such as a professional book review project that earns 40-60 new books annually.   Our LMC Computer Lab is equipped with 17 Gateway personal computers, a HP ScanJet Scanner, Intel PC Microscope, and networked printer.

History

Part of the newest wing built at the end of the 1990’s, the main library is dedicated to Mrs. Donna Oesch.  She was the Bloomingdale and Lake Clear library media specialist for 15 years before she lost her life to cancer in 1998.   Mrs. Oesch’s students and colleagues honored her memory by dedicating the facility to her in 1999.
