|The Play is Coming:|
On January 8 and 9, the students of SLHS will be performing "I Never Saw Another Butterfly."
I NEVER SAW ANOTHER BUTTERFLY chronicles the true story of Raja Englandarova and her life inTEREZIN: a Jewish ghetto established by Nazis to seclude many of Europe's high profile Jews - composers to decorated WW1 War heroes. Terezin's unique community of scholars, artists and teachers worked to make life for its inhabitants as "normal" as possible. Public concerts and stage performances in addition to ongoing and secret classes in math, writing and the arts are credited with givingTerezin's inhabitants the courage to live through yet one more gruelling "today" and face the possibility of yet another "good-bye." This One-act version of Celeste Raspanti's full length play includes selections of poetry written by Terezin's young students as part of their secret classroom activities. After the war, these poems were hidden from the world for ten years and then brought to light.
The poems and Raja's story are an uplifting testament to our collective spirit and our capacity to connect with and draw strength from each other as well as the simplest of life's pleasures... a butterfly.
