SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

Section 68.1    Purpose

 

The purpose of this policy is to comply with the requirements of No Child Left Behind Act that school districts with a school having programs supported by Title I funds and identified as being in need of improvement for its failure to make adequate yearly progress (AYP) for three consecutive years must make supplemental educational services (SES) available to eligible students from low-income families who attend such schools.

Section 68.2    Supplemental Educational Services

 

(A)            In the event that a District school having programs supported by Title I funds is identified as being in need of improvement by reason of its failure to make adequate yearly progress for three consecutive years, the District shall, subject to paragraph (B) of this section, make supplemental educational services (SES) available to eligible students from low-income families who attend such schools.  SES shall be provided outside the regular school day, including but not limited to before and after school, on weekends or during the summer.

 

(B)            Notwithstanding any other provision of this policy, in the event that there are insufficient Title I funds to provide SES to all eligible students, the District shall give priority to the lowest achieving students from low-income families as determined by the District for purposes of Title I allocations.

 

(C)            The District shall not be required to provide transportation to students receiving SES, but may in its discretion use available Title I funds to transport students.

 

(D)            Nothing shall prohibit the District from applying for an exemption from the SES requirements.

Section 68.3    Notification of Right to SES

 

(A)            The Superintendent shall annually notify in writing the parents of any student entitled to SES pursuant to this policy.

 

(B)            The written notice shall be sent by first class mail and contain the following information:

(1) information on the availability of SES;

(2) the identity of state-approved providers within the District or whose services are reasonably available in neighboring districts; and

(3) a brief description of the services, qualifications and demonstrated effectiveness of each such provider.
