HOMEWORK

Section  44.1            Purpose

 

(A)            The Board of Education recognizes homework as an extremely valuable activity and as an appropriate extension of classroom instruction. 

 

(B)            Homework:

(1)        provides excellent opportunities for

(a) developing good study habits,

(b) providing for individual differences and abilities, and

(c)            encouraging self-initiative on the part of the student;

(2) helps children learn by providing practice in the mastery of skills, experience in data gathering and integration of knowledge, and an opportunity to remediate learning problems;  and

(3) helps develop the student's sense of responsibility by providing an opportunity for the exercise of independent work and judgment.

Section  44.2            Parental Involvement

 

The Board of Education believes that parental involvement in students' homework is essential to making homework an integral part of the educational program.  Parents are expected to encourage and monitor homework assignments and, to the extent possible, provide conditions that are conducive to their successful completion.

Section  44.3            Responsibilities of Teaching Staff

 

(A)            Homework shall be a properly planned part of the curriculum extending and reinforcing the learning experience of the school.  Planning homework assignments shall be given as much care as the planning of any other aspect of a lesson.

 

(B)            In assigning homework, members of the teaching staff shall comply with the following:

(1) students shall not be overloaded with homework assignments which are either excessively lengthy or overly brief;

(2) students in middle school shall not be overloaded with more than 3 concurrent overnight homework assignments in their various subject areas, and the total time for a student to complete all overnight homework assignments on any given night shall not exceed

(a) sixty minutes for sixth grade,

(b) seventy minutes for seventh grade, and

(c) eighty minutes for eighth grade;

(3) the total time for a high school student to complete all overnight homework assignments on any given night shall not exceed two hours;

(4) homework shall not be assigned as a substitute for classroom instruction;  and

(5) homework should be clearly assigned and its product carefully and promptly evaluated.

(C)            The number, frequency, and degree of difficulty of homework assignments should be based on the abilities, activities, and needs of the student;  however, the grade given for the homework is dependent on the student's performance.

 

(D)            No overnight homework shall be assigned on the day of any scheduled evening:

(1) high school band and/or chorus concert, or opening night of a high school play, but only for high school students;

(2) middle school band and/or chorus concert, but only for the specific grade(s) from which the members of such band or chorus are performing;

(3) such other events of a community nature which the Superintendent, in his discretion and subject to such limitations as the Superintendent deems advisable, determines in writing.
